Homemade Air Dry Clay

Updated: Aug 16, 2021

This air-dry clay recipe only requires three ingredients, is super easy to use and will be dry in a few days time.

Ingredients

- 2 Cups of Baking Soda (Bicarb Soda NOT Baking Powder)

- 1 Cup of Cornflour

- 1 ¼ Cups Water

Place all of the ingredients into a saucepan and put over a medium heat on the stove.

Stir continuously until the mixture thickens and has a smooth sticky consistency.

Take it out of the pot (be careful as it will be hot) and pop it into a bowl covered with a tea towel and allow approximately 15-20 minutes for it to completely cool.

Once cooled, knead it and stretch it until it’s smooth and no longer sticky. Now you are ready to create!!

We rolled our clay out on baking paper to a thickness of approx 1cm, and cut circles out to make our trinket dishes. We bought some wooden embellishments from Kmart, so the girls pushed those into their clay to make patterns on their plates.

Once they were done, we flipped one of our larger bowls from home upside down, and placed another piece of baking paper on top. We flipped the dishes over so the patterns were facing down and placed them gently on top of the upside down bowl. We then very gently shaped the clay around the bowl to give it some shape. This is how we left them to dry.

You want the pieces you make to AIR dry so keep them away from all heat sources, including the sun. We dried ours in our spare room with the blinds closed and the door shut......they were fully dried after three days.

After the pieces are dry you can decorate them. We used acrylic paints but you can use watercolour, glue & glitter, Sharpie pens - Anything goes!! You could also try setting objects into your pieces such as crystal chips, beads or sequins.
